Ebooks: Using Marx Library Ebooks with Ereaders: ProQuest Ebook Central

Requirements for Use

ProQuest Ebook Central requires you to login using your database credentials whether you are on or off campus. There is no walk-in use; you must be affiliated with the University of South Alabama to read these books.

Ebook Central titles also have digital rights management built into them. To download them for offline viewing, you need to have the free Adobe Digital Editions (for PCs) or BlueFire Reader (for Apple devices) on your computer.

Compatible Devices

Amazon does not currently work well with Adobe Digital Editions so Ebook Central titles may not be read on a non-Fire Kindle. They will work on the following devices.

  1. Nook
  2. Sony eReader
  3. Kobo
  4. iPad
  5. Android
  6. Kindle Fire

Printing/Downloading Restrictions

Ebook Central has some limits on printing and copying:

Offline Printing: 10% of the book
Online Printing: 30% of the book
Offline Copying: 10% of the book
Online Copying: 15% of the book

Each individual book record indicates on the Details and the Download tabs how many pages you have left for printing and copying.

Searching

The default search screen for Ebook Central is the basic serch screen, but you can also browse choose to do an Advance Search or to Browse Subjects. The Advanced Search Option allows more precise search options.

Basic Search

Browse Subjects: explore broad subject areas by clicking on any topic.

Advanced Search: allows you to specify particular fields, limit by subject heading (Library of Congress Subject Headings), limit by language, and more. Within the Advanced Search , you can also limit your search by the download format you are interested in (remember though that all titles are available as pdf, but not every book is available in epub), and to only titles that the Marx Library owns.

Results Screen

The results screen allows you to further refine your search, sort your results and choose options for reading.

Book Details Screen

This screen provides a wealth of information about a title and gives options for reading and downloading. When you choose Cite Book, the citation is available in MLA, APA, Chicago (both Notes-Bibliography and Author-Date), Harvard, and Vancouver styles.

Checking Out and Downloading an Ebook Central Title

To download and checkout an ebook:

  1. Choose Read Online or Download Book
  2. If you choose Download Book, you'll see a message that the University of South Alabama University Library would like you to open this book before downloading. Choose Open Book.
  3. The books details do not show when you open the book. Click on the book to the left of the book cover.
  4. Choose Full Download.
  5. You will be asked what type of device you are using and will need to indicate whether you are using your computer or a public computer.
  6. Click on Continue
  7. You will be given the option to download Adobe Digital Editions; if you already have it, choose Done with this step.
  8. Options for download appear. Choose Loan length and format (sometimes your choices will be pdf or epub)
  9. Click on Download Your Book
