Evaluating Web Resources

Questions to ask when evaluating a website:

  • Who is the intended audience?
  • What is the purpose of the site?
  • When was the site last updated?
  • Where does the site reside (e.g., .com, .edu, .gov, .org, etc.)?
  • How is the information biased (if at all)?

While it is often safer to rely on information from non-profits and associations (org), government agencies (gov), and academic institutions (edu),  than commercial sites (com), there are always exceptions. You must consider who created the site, why it seems to have been created (and for what audience), and how current the information is. It is also very important to consider if there may be an advantage to the creator in providing biased information.
