Popular sources and scholarly sources have different uses. Scholarly sources should have a higher research quality and more rigorous design.

It is important to distinguish them, so you know if an item (like an article) is appropriate for your assignment.

    • Created for a general audience
    • Don't assume you have expert knowledge in a topic
    • Often have ads
    • Have not been peer-reviewed
    • Written by a journalist or other professional writer
  • Scholarly sources:
    • Created for an academic or researcher audience
    • Assume you have expert knowledge or are building expertise
    • Do not have ads
    • Written by an expert in the subject with experience and/or education
