Data Sources for Business Ph.D. Students: U.S. Data

Search Strategies

When searching Google, you can limit the search results to government websites by adding in    site:.gov  to the search. (To limit to educational websites, use   site:.edu )

NOTE: Some US government websites do not work with Google Chrome browser. Try using a different browser. 

Pew Research Center

Pew Research Center - "Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world. We conduct public opinion polling, demographic research, content analysis and other data-driven social science research. We do not take policy positions."

Non-profit Organizations

Non-profit organizations (503C) have to file a Form 990 with the IRS every year. This shows their top donors and expenses. There are several sources that provide this information, such as Guidestar.org. A basic account is free and will provide access to the Form 990s. They do have a more advanced paid subscription.  

U.S. Government Data Sources

The U.S. Government is the largest publisher in the world. Every day the U.S. Government issues congressional bills, laws, regulations, presidential documents, studies, and more on a variety of topics.

Noteworthy Census Sites

Census.gov - demographic data for entire U.S., states, counties, cities, towns, tracts, census block. Also includes data on business and industry, income, poverty, employment, health, education, housing, voting and registration, etc. This is the government agency that's over NAICS numbers and the Economic Census.

Statistical Abstract of the United States - This was an annual publication from the 1870s to 2011. It has statistics that were produced by the U.S. Government. There's also a link to the Historical Statistics of the United States.  NOTE: THIS SITE DOES NOT WORK IN GOOGLE CHROME BROWSER.

Business Data

Bureau of Economic Analysis - BEA's economists produce some of the world's most closely watched statistics, including U.S. gross domestic product, better known as GDP. We do state and local numbers, too, plus foreign trade and investment stats and industry data.

 

Bureau of Labor Statistics - The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making. It collects and disseminates statistics on topics such as inflation and prices, pay and benefits, spending and time use, employment, unemployment, workplace injuries, and productivity.  

 

EDGAR- Securities and Exchange Commission filings database. All companies, foreign and domestic, are required to file registration statements, periodic reports, and other forms electronically through EDGAR. Anyone can access and download this information for free. Here you'll find links to a complete list of filings available through EDGAR and instructions for searching the EDGAR database.

 

Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) - FRED is an online database consisting of hundreds of thousands of economic data time series from scores of national, international, public, and private sources. FRED, created and maintained by the Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, goes far beyond simply providing data: It combines data with a powerful mix of tools that help the user understand, interact with, display, and disseminate the data. In essence, FRED helps users tell their data stories. The purpose of this article is to guide the potential (or current) FRED user through the various aspects and tools of the database.
