Finding Theses & Dissertations at the University Library

Theses and dissertations written at USA in non-medical fields are shelved in the Reference area located on the 2nd floor North of the Marx Library.  All of these bound items carry a classification number of LD 9 and are organized by the granting college and the date they were produced.  Theses and dissertations from the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health are housed in the Baugh Biomedical Library. 

If submitted to UMI in digital format, dissertations produced at the Univesity of South Alabama since 1996 and indexed in Dissertation Abstracts/ Digital Dissertations are free for USA faculty, students, and staff.  Just click the Full text - PDF link. 

Finding Thesess & Dissertations in SOUTHcat

Two methods:

1.  Search the library catalog, SOUTHcat (link located on the library homepage) using the keywords "dissertation academic" and selecting the "Subject Heading Browse" option from the Search By: menu.

The results provided will break out the dissertations by department.  If you wanted dissertations at USA from the Department of Chemical Engineering, click on "Dissertations, Academic--University of South Alabama--Dept. of Chemical Engineering" to see the titles and holdings information for the 38 dissertations from that department.

2. Search SOUTHcat using keyword and Advanced Boolean Searches.

ex. (dissertation? or thesis) and "south alabama"

      (thesis or dissertation?) and "instructional design" and "south alabama"

      (thesis or dissertation?) and tennis and "south alabama"
