BLY 549 Scientific Writing for Biologists

This guide is to support students in Dr. Major's BLY 549 course

Control the Corpus - Upload Your Documents

To create a new Notebook, either click on the Create new notebook image on the left top,  or the Create New button at the right top.

This will prompt you to upload files. You can upload files such as PDFs, and MP3s; add files from your Google Drive, Links to YouTube or other websites, or even paste text such as notes.

This will be the body (or corpus) of work that NotebookLM will reference when you ask questions, or look to summarize, etc.

The new notebook will automatically be named. You can change it by simply clicking on the title in the upper left and typing the new name.

Asking Questions in NotebookLM

Basic questions can be asked in the center panel. When you word your questions, think carefully about what your question is and what kind of answer you are looking for. Are you looking for a summary? A timeline? Best practices? If you want a list, make sure to ask for a list.

When NotebookLm gives an answer, there are citations within the answer that refer back to the information that you uploaded, allowing you to review the AI's summary and conclusions by looking at the works yourself.

Common types of questions asked of NotebookLM's analysis of the uploaded materials are

  • Summary of the works
  • Brief overview of the works
  • Current practices
  • Future implications
  • Timeline of events
  • Documented outcomes

But this is just a short list of an almost endless list of types of questions that you can ask. Once you ask the question, NotebookLM will give you its answer with citations from within the material you have uploaded or linked. If you click on an in-text citation, it will open the original document in the left pane and highlight where the answer is found.

PLEASE NOTE: If you want to save this information to revisit later, you must save it as a note. You will find this option at the bottom of the answer to your question. You can also copy the answer to paste into another document and give feedback on the quality of the response.
