Common Read/ Common World Program
The University of South Alabama has chosen Zora Neale Hurston's Barracoon as its 2023-2024 Common Read/Common World book. It is the story of one of the last survivors of the Middle Passage, Cudjo Lewis (born Oluale Kossola), who arrived in Africatown from the Clotilda. Barracoon is based on Hurston's interviews with Lewis.

Barracoon by Zora Neale Hurston was born in Notasulga, AL, on January 7, 1891. While she was still young, her family moved to Eatonville, FL, which she always considered to be her home. Hurston is the author of several novels and non-fiction works, the most well-known of which is Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. This novel was made into a movie starring Halle Berry and Michael Ealy.
