Common Read/ Common World Program
The University has chosen Cradle of Freedom by Frye Gaillard as the book for its 2015-2016 Common Read/Common World program. This book discusses Alabama's role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Frye Gaillard is the University of South Alabama Writer in Residence. He specializes in Southern history and culture and has written extensively on race relations in the South. He was the recipient of the 2005 Lillian Smith Award for best Southern non-fiction for Cradle of Freedom, a book that also received recognition from the Alabama Library Association as the 2007 non-fiction Book of the Year.
