Common Read/Common World: Late Migrations: Home

Common Read/Common World is a voluntary learning initiative based on a shared learning experience of students, faculty and community members.

Events and speakers will be scheduled throughout the academic year. This will enable students and faculty to engage critically with the ideas and themes of the book. Common Read/Common World is a university-wide program, and a partnership between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

The Common Read/Common World committee has announced next year's book selection, Late Migrations, a memoir by Alabama writer Margaret Renkl. A collection of essays on family, identity and the relationship to the natural environment, the author's recollections probe our relationship to the nature that surrounds us, to our family and background, and to our beliefs and communities. Renkl is a contributing writer to the New York Times with an impressive array of essays and books. Her short chapters (“micro-essays”) offer powerful reflections on her upbringing in Alabama, touching on both home and faith.
