Students are required to register with USA’s Office of Student Disability Services in order to receive assistance campus-wide. The Office offers a lab designed for disabled students which provides a variety of products, such as Braille and regular printers, CCTVs for magnification and test taking, scanner to convert text to be read on personal computers or in the lab, and JAWS software. The Office of Student Disability Services will assist with registration for RFB&D (Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic) which offers titles in every subject area and grade level, including audio textbooks on CD and downloadable audio textbooks.
All branches of the Mobile Public Library have large print books, recorded books and Closed Captioned videos. The Mobile Public Library also provides information and applications for The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped through the Library of Congress which administers a free national program to provide audiobooks on disks and cassettes and special equipment on which to play them. The Library's Circulation Desk accepts patron requests to have library materials retrieved from the circulating book shelves for in-library use or check out. Disabled students and faculty may also call the Circulation Desk (251-460-7028) and request retrieval of up to 10 titles. Available items will be held for 3 days for pickup at the Circulation Desk.
There are public terminals that are accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Wireless access for personal laptops is available on all floors of the University Library.
Six Handicapped spaces are available in the North parking lot near the JagTran stop. A sidewalk leads to the East entrance. One Handicapped space is located near the loading dock on the West side of the library. A ramp on the dock leads to the West entrance
All floors of the Library are accessible by the elevators on the North and South sides of the building. The elevator control panels are at wheelchair level and have Braille indicators. The elevators also have audible signals and an emergency speaker telephone.
All floors have wheelchair accessible rest rooms. Signs near doors will indicate accessibility.
Library photocopiers are self-service and operate using a TRACcard. Disabled users who experience difficulty in making copies may request Circulation staff (First Floor) or Reference/Copy Service staff (Second Floor North) to make copies for them. Allow 24 hours for this service. Copies are 10 cents per page.
A courtesy telephone is located in the Atrium near the circular staircase and the North elevators.
If the fire alarm sounds and flashes, do NOT use the elevators. Wait by the stairs and the library staff and emergency personnel will come to you.
