General Information

Often, when professors want to be sure everyone in their classes gets a chance to read required or even supplemental material, they will put such items on Reserve in the library.

Reserve items may be either Library Reserve or Course Reserve. Library Reserve items include such materials as found in the circulating collection or in a non-circulating collection. Course Reserves are those items (books, journal articles, tests, etc.) placed at the Circulation Desk by an instructor.

When requesting a Reserve item, to help Circulation staff serve you better and faster, first find the item's call number in SOUTHcat.  You may also wish to place your personal/professional materials on Course Reserves for your students to use.

Please note that Reserve differs from Reference. Most Reference materials are on self-service (open) shelves in the Reference Department. Reference materials do not circulate; whereas, some Reserves items may circulate for up to seven (7) days. The circulation status will be indicated on the SOUTHcat record. For example, if you do a title search for New GRE Verbal workbook, you'll see that its status is:

Marx Library Bookstacks
7th 2011 c.1 Temporarily Shelved at Marx Library Circulation Desk, 7 Day Library Reserve
