Interlibrary Loan & ILLiad

For the complete guide to ILL and Document Delivery, see Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery.

ILLiad is the electronic system the Marx Library uses for Interlibrary Loan and Copy Service. To use ILLiad, you need to set up an account.

Requests for items that we own (electronic or print) will be routed to our Document Delivery (Copy Service) service or Book Valet service. Check the SOUTHcat Catalog and Our Journal List to see if we own an item before submitting ILL requests. Items owned by the Marx Library can be copied through our Copy Service. Always provide complete citation information. Do not abbreviate.

NOTE: The Biomedical Library handles Interlibrary Loan requests for faculty and students of the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health.

Delivery Options for Interlibrary Loan

  1. Electronic delivery (must be a registered user of ILLiad and have Adobe Acrobat Reader -- download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. See Electronic Delivery tab for instructions.
  2. US Mail: no extra charge
  3. Pick up at Reference Desk: no extra charge

Document Delivery Fees

There are generally no fees associated with Interlibrary Loan items that the Marx Library is able to get from Alabama libraries or from libraries with which we have reciprocal agreement.  The Marx Library will also copy and deliver articles (Document Delivery) owned by our library and there are no fees associated with this service either.

Allow 24 hours (Monday - Friday) for delivery. Article requests are limited to 3 per day and citations should be complete and accurate. Requests must be submitted via ILLiad.

Charges will be posted to the library patron's account. Payments may be made at the Circulation Desk in person or by mail. Department or grant accounts may be set up via Voyager by the ILL Office for payment by BANNER Direct Pay. All payments are due by the end of the semester.

To use Document Delivery (Copy Service) you must be a registered user of ILLiad. Use the ILLiad Photocopy/Article form or the Book Chapter request form and select Yes to the question, "Is this item available in the University Libraries collections?".

To register for ILLiad, see the First Time User Registration page.

Journal articles at the Biomedical Library (Campus site, USAMC and Children's and Women's) should be requested from their document delivery service.

Copyright Notice

The library will only fulfill requests where the user has signified YES to the copyright restriction. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or other reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright.
