Ebooks: Using Marx Library Ebooks with Ereaders: Android Phones

Phone

Android

Compatible Ebook Collections

Marx Library owned ebook collections can be read with Android phones if they are supported by Adobe Digital Editions.

General Information

The phone I used for this is the Samsung Galaxy SII. Other phones will be similar, but not exactly the same.

Adobe Reader

I did not find it necessary to download a pdf reader in order to read the ebooks that are in pdf format; however, I downloaded Adobe Reader just to see if it made a difference. I do think the readibility of the documents is better with the Abode Reader, which is free in the Android Market (now Google Play).

Adobe Digital Editions (EBSCO eBooks and ebrary)

In order to transfer EBSCO eBooks and ebrary books to your Android phone, you must have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. This is a free download:

  1. Download Adobe Digital Editions from http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/#fp
  2. If you do not have an Adobe ID, create one at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm?nf=1&nl=1&loc=en_us

Your phone may or may not be compatible with Adode Digital Editions -- the Samsung Galaxy SII is not, although Galaxy tablets are. For a complete list of compatible devices, go to http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/supported-devices.

I could not read EBSCO ebooks at all on the Galaxy SII phone, but I could read ebrary titles as long as I didn't try to download them or use the ebrary reader -- clicking on the title takes you to the book content.

Transferring Files via Adobe Digital Editions

  1. Connect your phone to your computer
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions, which will recognize your phone if it is supported by ADE.
  3. Drag and drop your book file to your phone.

Springer Ebooks

Springer books to not require Adobe Digital Editions. The downside to that is that they can only be downloaded a chapter at a time. To download a chapter to your phone, try the following:

  1. Access Springer through your phone's web browser and go to the Marx Library's web site at http://library.southalabama.edu/. Choose Electronic Books.
  2. After you find a book chapter you're interested in, click on Download PDF

    Springer Choose Chapter Download

  3. An arrow appears at the top of your phone notifying you of a download -- on the Galaxy it's on the top left

  4. Pull down your notifications screen and the download complete notification will appear.

  5. Tap on the name of the document and you will get a screen asking how to open it.

  6. If you have Adobe Reader on your phone, choose it and the document will open.
