Laptop Connections in the Marx Library: Common Problems with Wireless

Computer Specifications

Your laptop or other wireless device must have:

  1. A wireless card meeting at least the B or G standard.
  2. The proper TCP/IP Ethernet drivers to support DHCP (Dynamic Addressing.)

You may need to reboot to establish your connection

Common Wireless Problems

  1. The Library's setup will only work with cards that use at least the B or the G standard.
  2. If there is more than one choice of networks to which to connect, use OPEN.
  3. If you frequently use the wireless connections at places like McDonald's, these connections may be set as the dominant connection. Delete all the wireless connections in your settings and reboot your computer. You should then be able to connect to OPEN.
  4. Don’t sit behind a lot of book stacks.
  5. Firewall software: firewall software on your laptop will probably block our laptop connections as you are already behind a firewall. Disable it while you are in the library.
  6. Windows Firewall is enabled. Disable this while you are in the library.
  7. Your laptop may be setup to use a specific IP address and DNS server instead of obtaining these automatically.

Windows Firewall

To disable Windows Firewall:

Windows 8 Windows 7 Windows XP
Press the Windows key and type "control panel" Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Windows Firewall Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Network Connections
Click Control Panel to show contents From the left, choose Turn Windows Firewall On or Off Highlight LAN Connection and right click on it
Click Windows Firewall For all three settings, choose Turn Off Windows Firewall Choose the Advanced tab and uncheck the box next to
“Protect my computer by limiting or preventing access to
this computer from the Internet.”
Click  Turn Windows Firewall on or off    

On the Customize Settings window, click the Turn off Windows Firewall  radio buttons both under the Private network settings and Public network settings
Click OK.

   

Remember to enable Windows Firewall again when you are through using the Library's wireless connections.

ip Address and DNS Server

Your laptop may be set up to use a specific IP address and DNS server. To change this:

Windows 7 Windows XP
Go to Start --> Control Panel -->Network & Sharing Center Go to Start --> Control Panel -->Network & Internet
Connections
Under View Your Active Networks, click on Local Area
Connection
From Pick a Control Panel Icon, choose
Network Connections
Click on the Properties button Properties Right click on your Local Area Connection and
choose Properties
Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click
on Properties
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click
on Properties
Choose Obtain an IP Address Automatically Choose Obtain an IP Address Automatically
Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically

Click on OK, then click on Close and then Close again –
you may need to restart your computer
