Accessing Resources from Off Campus: Browser or Connection Problems

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer sometimes defaults to a higher level of security for cookies than the databases can accept. To change this:

  • From the menu at the top of IE, select Tools
  • Select Internet Options
  • Select the Privacy tab
  • This is probably set to Medium; change to the Low setting
  • You may need to exit Internet Explorer and open it again.

The Low setting still restricts cookies that provide personal information and those that don't have a compact privacy policy. You can change this setting after you are through using the Libraries' databases.

Macs and Safari

There have been known issues with EZproxy and Safari. If you are using Safari and having problems accessing University Libraries databases, download Firefox at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html.

USA Online

Sometimes going to the Library databases through USA Online's library link causes problems. Instead, go directly to the Libraries' webpages:

Marx Library: http://library.southalabama.edu/
Biomedical Library: http://biomedicallibrary.southalabama.edu/library/
MCOB Library: http://www.southalabama.edu/univlib/mcob/

USA VPN and EZproxy

There is an unsolvable incompatibility between the Virtual Private Network (VPN) and the Libraries' online resources. If you are logged into the network using VPN, log out and use your regular connection to the Internet. When you login, you only have a connection from your computer to the Network computer which is not recognized as a USA wide IP address.
